#31 - The Avengers Assemble Against Assholes Who Text in Movie Theaters

Zane talks about how awesome The Avengers was, but because Justin is lame and hasn't gone to see it yet, he talks about the amazing new anthology horror movie The Theatre Bizarre that just hit DVD. The whole conversation steers into a long conversation about how 35mm film screenings are near extinction and how it's going to ruin theatrical screenings even more than assholes with cell phones. Plus, Zane comes up with a solution for how movie theaters should deal with these texting assholes, Justin and Zane recall encounters with Udo Kier and Sid Haig at horror conventions and Zane reviews the new The Walking Dead video game from Telltale Games. We close out the show with a few rounds of Plot Plot Pass.

2 Ernest movie reviews in a row! We review the first time Jim Varney graced the screen as Ernest P. Worrell in ERNEST GOES TO CAMP, which finds Ernest obtaining his dream of becoming a camp counselor for a ragtag group of deliquents being given a "second chance." What results is a bunch of wacky madcap scenes and a bunch of young boys who want to show their midriffs in half-shirts for some reason. We're as perplexed as you. Plus, we take a listen to Jim Varney's singing voice, Justin discusses co-star Iron Eyes Cody's past playing Native American roles when he was actually Italian, Zane professes how much he adores one character in the film and both hosts talk about the worst character in the history of Ernest movies. Which characters are we talking about? You have to tune in to find out!

We delve back into our Ernest review vault to bring you the second-best movie from the whole Ernest P. Worrell saga: Ernest Goes to Jail. Zane and Justin discuss the movie's eccentricities, such as prison guards dressed entirely in bright pink and Ernest's ability to become a human electromagnet. Plus, Zane questions what kind of elaborate rube goldberg machine Ernest would build to shave his scrotum and Justin shares a story about the importance of the film from his childhood.

Also, we play Guess the Tomatometer and read real reviews from Amazon.com and Rotten Tomatoes users. And we the Hodgepodcast street team, where listeners can sign up to get some free stickers and gifts and help promote the show! Justin and Zane talk about Bobcat Goldthwait's new movie God Bless America, as well as Goldthwait's other films (including Sleeping Dogs Lie and World's Greatest Dad) and comparisons to James Gunn's Super. Plus, we cover Morgan Spurlock's Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, "Weird Al" Yankovic's new webseries Face to Face at the Nerdist YouTube Channel, new seasons of Eastbound and Down, South Park, Game of Thrones, Miley Cyrus eating a penis-shaped cake and more!

We wrap up the show with a round of Plot Shots featuring LOL and The Lucky One and a game of Plot Plot Pass, where we create the plot for Zombie Chimney Sweeps starring Ryan Gosling and Burt Reynolds.

#27 - A Gnome Named Gnorm

Zane and Justin unearth effects guru Stan Winston's A GNOME NAMED GNORM for a family films review. This weird little film stars Anthony Michael Hall as a cop who has to buddy around with a 2 foot tall gnome who, as you may expect, is named Gnorm. However, don't expect any cute little guys from your mom's garden: Gnorm is terrifying animatronic puppet that used to give Zane nightmares as a kid.

We take a listen to some clips from the movie, discuss why there is an audible "g" sound in the title and try not to confuse ourselves over the fact that the bad guy's name is Z'Dar and another character played weird-faced b-movie legend Robert Z'Dar

This week, you get two episodes of Hodgepodcast in one! That twice the amount of Hodgepodcast for your buck - which is a great deal, considering this is a free podcast!

Recorded from our cozy Super 8 hotel room at Cinema Wasteland, we're first joined by our good friend and fellow FACES OF SCHLOCK co-producer Charles Zimmerman. We discuss our favorite horror movie moments, while Joshua Lively watches an episode of Animal Planet's TOO CUTE on mute in the background. Unfortunately, that show kind of took us out of the element, but goddamn those puppies were cute.

After that, we're joined by Ukulele virtuoso and FACES OF SCHLOCK creator Henrique Couto where we play another round of Plot Plot Pass. Henrique points out that there's already a game just like this on Adam Carolla's podcast, which Zane and Justin didn't know because they're not one of the million listeners he has. However, we do make him the star of our fictional film A Sprinkle in Time co-starring Geena Davis. Justin also repeatedly blows his electronic cigarette vapor into Henrique's face.

Justin, Zane and Josh recap the March Cinema Wasteland convention from their hotel room in Strongsville, OH. They recap their weekend at Ohio's best drive-in/grindhouse/horror memorabilia convention, including Josh enjoying The Evil Dead make-up artist Tom Sullivan's museum, the creation of a special beer koozie club called "The Brotherhood of the Koozie," seeing Richard Kiel in an unfortunate situation and getting incredibly drunk. Also, Josh gets incredibly distracted by trying to watch an episode of Animal Planet's Too Cute while trying to podcast.

Plus, we announce a future Family Films podcast review. What movie will we review? You have to tune in to find out!

We debut the brand-new Hodgepodcast game - Plot Plot Pass - where Justin, Zane and Josh all come up with the plot of a fictional Hollywood movie. We think it's safe to say that the movie pitch that followed, a film titled Truck of Miracles starring Nicholas Cage and Dakota Fanning, will most likely never be made. Also, we talk a bit about the upcoming Cinema Wasteland convention on March 30th-April 1st that we'll be attending.

Unfortunately, the show gets ruined once Petey Bartonelli shows up at the studio with his cousin Terry in tow. Hopefully by the next show, Petey will finally pay attention to our rental schedule for the studio space. Until then, enjoy this week's podcast!

Josh Lively stops by the Hodgepodcast studios again for his first Family Film Review episode! We take an in-depth look at Shaquille O'Neal's starring role as a rapping genie in KAZAAM. Did we enjoy this critically-loathed '90s kids comedy? Oh, we're not giving up the answer that easy. You'll have to listen to all 50 minutes of this week's show to find out! Plus, we play clips of Shaq's fantastic rap skills from the film.

After the review, we get Josh in on a game of Plot Shots where we try to guess the plots of Detachment, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Neighborhood WatchMagic Mike, Seeking Justice, and That's My Boy. Will we correctly guess the plots? Will Josh return for another episode? And what would we wish for if we found Kazaam? All of these questions and more will be answered in this week's podcast!

Filmmaker Victor Bonacore joins Justin over Skype to talk about his upcoming documentary, DIARY OF A DEADBEAT, which focuses on infamous independent film director Jim Van Bebber (Deadbeat at Dawn, The Manson Family, My Sweet Satan). The trailer for the doc was just put up on YouTube and Victor will be releasing it along with a collection Van Bebber's never-before-seen early 8mm and Super8 short films.

Victor discusses how the project began, remastering the short films, and what it took to get the interviews included in the film - including Richard Kern, Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down, Mitch Davis, Buddy Giovinazzo (Combat Shock, Life is Hot in Cracktown) and more. Plus, we geek out about shooting movies on film, talk about Victor's upcoming films Blood Wings and Shitfucked, as well as his involvement in ScreamerClauz's recently released twisted animated film, Where the Dead Go To Die.

After the interview, Justin tries to make Zane happy after not inviting him to the Skype interview session by playing a round of our new favorite game, Plot Shots. Zane tries to get Justin to guess the plot of the upcoming movie Mirror Mirror while Justin picks The Cold Light of Day for Zane to guess.

Josh Lively returns to the show right as Justin and Zane are set to give away the Star Trek action figures he left in the Hodgepodcast studio space. This week's episode is a recap of the things we were most excited about in February, including McDonalds Shamrock Shakes, new TV shows like Life is Too Short and Kevin Smith's Comic Book Men, the return of The Walking Dead and Eastbound and Down, and much more!

Plus, we discuss the trailers for all of the big upcoming superhero movies, like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and the absolutely awful-looking The Amazing Spider-Man. Justin and Zane also harass Josh over the fact that he hasn't joined Twitter like we have and threaten to create a fake account for him if he doesn't finally sign up.

Will Josh get a Twitter account? Well, you'll have to stay tuned throughout March to find out... or read our Tweets.

Finally, we close the show with a song from our favorite band The Ultimatums called "I'll Be Right Back." Check them out at http://www.theultimatums.com

Justin and Zane open the show talking about Marvel's recent lawsuit against Ghost Rider creator Gary Friedrich and share their opinions after watching Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie on video-on-demand. This leads to a full-on discussion of what watching movies in theaters have become thanks to shitty moviegoers.

Later, the segment where they planned to discuss Movies We Hate, But Everybody Loves, the show is unfortunately interrupted by Petey Bartonelli, a dart-enthusiast who rents the same studio space as our show. He stays for the remainder of the episode and we hope he can remember what our recording schedule is and this won't be a problem in the future.

We got all kinds of new merch at the Hodgepodcast Store, so if you're enjoying our fine free podcast, please pick up some stuff and help us afford to keep this show going!

This week's Family Films Review is 1988's MAC AND ME, the infamously bad 90-minute commercial for McDonalds and Coca-Cola that was disguised as an E.T.: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL knock-off. However, we were surprised to find that we actually enjoyed watching it and even rewound parts of the movie over-and-over again. Actually, it was just the part where the main character - a boy in a wheelchair - falls off a cliff, but still.

As always, we play a round of Guess the Tomatometer and read reviews from users of Amazon.com and IMDb.com. But new to this episode is the introduction of our new game, Plot Shots, where we tell the title and 2 lead actors of an upcoming movie and have to try to guess what the plot of the movie is. For the debut game, we try to guess the synopsis for BUTTER and A THOUSAND WORDS.

And don't forget to buy your Hodgepodcast merchandise from our Zazzle store! We just added buttons and stickers!

This week's episode is all about announcing the new line of Hodgepodcast merchandise from Zazzle! Justin and Zane were mostly excited about the Hodgepodcast mugs, so we spend the majority of this episode talking all about mugs. Whether it be our favorite mugs, benefits of travel mugs, favorite beverages to drink out of mugs or anything else inbetween, mug enthusiasts can be sure that we hit just about mug-centric topic you can imagine!

We delve back into our 10-hour long Ernest movie review show to bring you the next installment of our Family Films Review offshoot, The Importance of Being Ernest. This time, we take a look at the late entry into the Ernest P. Worrell saga, ERNEST GOES TO AFRICA. Zane and Justin were a bit disappointed in this one, noting some signs of racism and the low-budget of Ernest's visit to Africa. We also take a listen to some select clips from the movies and read user reviews from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, including a review from a man who claims that he poops movies. This is one you can't afford to miss, Hodgepodcast fans!

Dont forget to follow the show on Twitter (@Hodgepodcast) and follow Justin (@J_Channell) and Zane(@Zaneosaurus) as well for all the latest updates on the show. And if you want to help us finally pay for pro hosting, buy a copy of the IWC Films Double Feature DVD for $5!
